On February 17, 2009 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 established a federal tax credit of 30% of the total cost of purchasing and installing a tankless water heater with a maximum credit of $1,500.
In order to qualify, the home owner must install a tankless unit of .82 efficiency or higher.
This substantially lowers the payback period for installing a tankless water heater. Further, the tax credit is a "credit" rather than a "deduction" on federal taxes which means that it reduces the homeowner's taxes dollar for dollar.
