What the End of ENERGY STAR Means for Your Water Heater Choices

As the ENERGY STAR® program phases out, many homeowners are wondering: How will this affect my next water heater purchase?  The short answer: You may lose a trusted tool for identifying the most energy-efficient models—but we’re here to help.  The likely effects on Water Heater Manufacturing:

Reduced Incentive for High-Efficiency Design: Without ENERGY STAR as a benchmark, manufacturers will feel less pressure to design and produce ultra-efficient water heaters, especially if cost-sensitive markets dominate.

Loss of Marketing Differentiation/  ENERGY STAR certification serves as a powerful marketing tool. Without it, manufacturers will lose a simple, trusted label distinguishing efficient models from standard ones.

Migration to DOE Minimum Standards.  Without ENERGY STAR, manufacturers may default to just meeting Department of Energy (DOE) minimum efficiency standards rather than exceeding them.

Possible Cost Reductions.  Some companies might reduce costs by eliminating higher-efficiency components, making units cheaper to produce—but potentially more expensive for consumers

Given all of this, what does it mean for consumers:

More Difficult Comparisons.  Consumers will have a harder time identifying the most efficient water heaters, since ENERGY STAR offers a quick, trustworthy indicator.

Fewer Incentives and Rebates.  Many utility rebates and tax incentives are tied to ENERGY STAR certification. Without it, homeowners will lose access to financial incentives for choosing efficient models.

Higher Long-Term Energy Costs.  If fewer efficient units are bought or made, households may see higher energy bills over time due to less efficient water heating.

Increased Reliance on Alternative Labels
Consumers may turn to less standardized or brand-specific efficiency claims, which can be inconsistent or confusing.

At Fast Water Heater, we stay ahead of industry changes. While the familiar blue ENERGY STAR label may disappear, our team continues to recommend and install high-efficiency water heaters that:

  • Reduce your energy bills
